Low Carb Diet > Health Risks of Low carb Diets

There are many dangers and health risks attached to low carb diets. The low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets which have become popular in recent years may be good at helping people lose weight rapidly, but they could also be damaging their kidneys and their bones, according to researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

Dangers of Low Carb Diets

Popular diet books point out that cutting out carbohydrate-containing foods may lead to temporary weight loss. This fact has been misinterpreted as suggesting that carbohydrate-rich foods are the cause of obesity. In epidemiological studies and clinical trials, the reverse has been shown to be true.

Many people throughout Asia consume large amounts of carbohydrate in the form of rice, noodles, and vegetables and generally have lower body weights than Americans—including Asian Americans—who eat large amounts of meat, dairy products, and fried foods. Similarly, vegetarians, who generally follow diets rich in carbohydrates, typically have significantly lower body weights than omnivores.

Proteins, fats and carbohydrates work together to keep our bodies healthy and functioning. There are vitamins, minerals and enzymes in protein that help digest and metabolize carbohydrates and fats, and there are vitamins, minerals and enzymes in carbohydrates that help metabolize proteins and fats. And vice versa for fat. When we take something out, something else suffers.

This type of diet increases the propensity to develop kidney stones, On the basis of this study alone, there was an increased risk of developing kidney stones and a possible increase in the risk of bone loss. We already know that osteoporosis is going to be a major issue as the population ages and if people are going to eat this kind of diet on a long-term basis, it's unknown what the implications would be for your bones.

A balanced diet is more impotant and always suggested instead of a diet that is imbalanced.
