Antihistamines have been in use since years to cure allergy symptoms. They can be taken as pills, liquid, nasal spray or eye drops. Over-the-counter antihistamine eye drops can lighten red itchy eyes, while nose sprays can be used to treat the symptoms of nasal allergies. Antihistamines are medicines that block the allergic reaction.
The popular antihistamines include Benadryl, Claritin, Chlor-Trimeton, Dimetane, Tavist and Ocu-Hist. Some of these medicines like Benadryl can cause drowsiness.
New prescription type antihistamines include Clarinex, Allegra, and Zyrtec. Astelin is a prescription nasal spray. Eye drops include Emadine and Livostin.
How do Antihistamines work in our body?
When we are open to the elements of an allergen, it triggers your resistant system to go into action. Immune system cells known as "mast cells" release a substance called histamine, which attaches to receptors in blood vessels causing them to enlarge. By blocking histamine receptors, antihistamines prevent these symptoms.
Side Effects of Antihistamines
Many over-the-counter antihistamines cause drowsiness. Non-sedating antihistamines are available by prescription.
Remember that all antihistamines obstruct with allergy testing. Ask your physician about which medicines you must discontinue taking prior to your planned allergy tests.
